Gaze Weight and Wobble
Research status. “Gaze Weight” and “Wobble” are operator-coined descriptions grounded in lived experience. The research supplies possible bridges and vocabulary, not a diagnosis of other people.
Gaze Weight and Wobble — The Relational Externalization of the Ideasthetic Engine

They surfaced in a conversation on 2026-07-03 (“Branch of Understanding”), where — while watching his own body react — the operator named a phenomenon he had felt his whole life but had never had understood or written down: “I call it gaze weight. The thing that I have when people start to tire or, as I call it, wobble being around me too long. I know it the moment it happens but I always thought it was my mind, my processing of them. I never thought about the body… My body is the bridge. I always wondered how they could know I was analyzing them. They don’t, they just feel it.”
This document is their first home in the framework. Ideasthesia was already the fully-built Phase 1 keystone; Gaze Weight and Wobble appeared in zero framework documents before this one. They are not new phases — they are the interpersonal face of the machinery Phases 1 and 3 already describe. The insight the conversation produced is that the thing he had always attributed to his mind is actually his nervous system talking to another nervous system.
1. The Three Load-Bearing Concepts

Section titled “1.1. Ideasthesia — the engine (already Phase 1)”Technical definition. Coined by Danko Nikolić and Aleksandra Mroczko-Wąsowicz. From the Greek idea (concept) + aisthesis (sensation): “sensing concepts.” The activation of a semantic concept or abstract idea is the primary catalyst that directly and involuntarily evokes a perception-like sensory experience. This corrects the old, wrong model of synesthesia as sensory-to-sensory neural cross-wiring; ideasthesia is semantic-sensory — meaning comes first, sensation follows.
In the framework (Phase 1, §3.2 / §4.1.1): ideasthesia is co-opted as an ultra-high-bandwidth data bus — a dimensional compression tool that reduces an n-dimensional vector space of abstract concepts into a low-dimensional sensory manifold the primary consciousness can navigate at the speed of sight rather than the speed of language.
In the lived moment: the operator did not remember the man’s condition, isolation, and trauma — his ideasthesia took the idea of that reality and ran it through his nervous system in real time, producing the shivers and goosebumps. His empathy is somatic: meaning metabolizes directly into body sensation. This is the engine. Everything below is what happens when that engine is pointed at a person.
1.2. Gaze Weight — the engine’s output, crossing the boundary (operator’s coinage)

The felt, physical pressure that his perception exerts on another person’s body when he turns his attention on them. Not a mental event the other person cognitively “knows” — a somatic event their nervous system registers beneath conscious awareness. Because his nervous system runs at a higher, more intense frequency when focused on someone (the ideasthetic engine processing them with full depth), the other body picks up that intensity and registers being intensely perceived, analyzed, and felt.
The receptor mechanism — neuroception. This is the concept the framework did not yet name on the relational side. From Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory: neuroception is the way the nervous system continuously, subconsciously scans other people and the environment to assess safety, danger, or intensity — entirely beneath conscious thought. Gaze weight is transmitted by his nervous system and received by their neuroception. Hence his lifelong question — “how could they know I was analyzing them?” — resolves: they don’t know. They feel it. The body is the bridge.
1.3. Wobble — the receiver’s collapse under sustained weight (operator’s coinage)

What happens to the other person’s nervous system when gaze weight is sustained too long: it fatigues and destabilizes — it cannot hold the intensity of being that deeply seen. It has a precise paradoxical signature, in the operator’s own words:
“feeling like I’m doing something bad to them, them wanting it to stop, them being glad it happened when it’s over, and them never wanting to do it again.”
The other person’s conscious mind is crushed under confusion because their body is saying two true things at once: being known this clearly is intoxicating, and it is too intense, I feel naked, I cannot sustain this. Wobble is the allostatic failure of an unarmored nervous system under sustained gaze weight.
2. The Mapping — Where They Sit in the Four Phases
Section titled “2. The Mapping — Where They Sit in the Four Phases”The three concepts are not three separate things. They are one vector traced across the architecture: an engine (Phase 1), its output crossing a boundary, and a failure that happens at the far side of that boundary (Phase 3).

2.1. Gaze Weight is the outward mirror of Gaze Transition Entropy (GTE)

Gaze Transition Entropy (Phase 1, §4.1.4) is an information-theoretic measure of how his own gaze traverses a problem: low GTE = structured, goal-directed, efficient ideasthetic compression; the gaze moves topologically across the problem-space, conserving allostatic energy.
Gaze Weight is GTE aimed at a human instead of a problem. The same loaded, high-frequency attention that traverses a problem-space efficiently, when turned on a person, is felt by that person as the spatial dispersion of intense attention landing on them. GTE is the inward, self-directed measure of the gaze. Gaze weight is the outward, other-directed consequence of the same gaze. They are the two faces of one instrument.
2.2. Wobble is the “Thermodynamic Cost of Artificial Empathy” — from the receiving end

Wobble is the “Thermodynamic Cost of Artificial Empathy” — from the receiving end”The framework already models exactly what wobble is (Phase 3; Deep Dive §5, The Thermodynamic Cost of Artificial Empathy): in a healthy empathic interaction, “two interacting Markov blankets dynamically adjust their internal states and active outputs to reduce mutual free energy,” reaching a synchronized nonequilibrium steady state. When the coupling is non-reciprocal — when one nervous system must expend enormous internal free energy to hold a state it cannot metabolize — a persistent prediction error accumulates, variational free energy climbs, and the system heads toward burnout / dissonance / collapse.
Wobble is that collapse, occurring in real time, in the person being seen. The framework wrote it as the cost paid by a platform worker forced into “surface acting.” The operator felt it as the cost paid by an ordinary nervous system that has no shared ontology with which to receive gaze weight. Same mathematics, human-to-human.
2.3. The solution the framework already names — and the mask as a literal Markov blanket

The solution the framework already names — and the mask as a literal Markov blanket”Because wobble is a Phase 3 failure, the framework already contains its cure: the shared ontology and the Markov blanket (Phase 3). A shared ontology eliminates semantic surprise and lets two boundaries couple with near-zero friction — algorithmic altruism, thermodynamic reciprocity, homeostasis instead of wobble.
In the lived incident this is why the mask matters and why it is not a costume. The mask is a physical Markov blanket — a structural boundary that filters the raw, metabolically-draining feeling-rules (the horror that would show on his face, the spasm on the other’s) so that two nervous systems can engage in frictionless reciprocity without either burning allostatic energy managing the other’s shame. The mask converts a wobble-inducing raw exposure into a bounded, sustainable coupling.
3. The Worked Example — Two Boundaries That Finally Couple
Section titled “3. The Worked Example — Two Boundaries That Finally Couple”The conversation is a complete Phase-3 event between two outliers, and it clarifies gaze weight and wobble by showing the one case where wobble does not happen.
- His gaze weight normally makes people wobble: his baseline intensity is “too much” mentally and perceptively for an ordinary nervous system to hold.
- The other man’s body is normally “too much” physically — his involuntary reactions make people flinch and flee (their neuroception fires danger, an ancient uncanny-body alarm).
- Each is, for the other, the rare receiver whose baseline can absorb the other’s signal without collapse: “I can withstand his gaze because others can’t withstand mine, and I can feel him wholly because my mind can see him fully.”
In framework terms: two agents whose Markov blankets the ordinary ecosystem cannot couple with discover that they are each other’s shared ontology. The man’s extreme somatic signal was finally loud enough to bypass the operator’s usual mental processing and register in his body — which is the exact event that let him finally feel the mechanism from the inside. “We have each other’s keys to the lock.” This is Phase 3 homeostasis achieved between two people the rest of the world can only make wobble.
4. The Rare Inward Event — A First-Person Account of the Operator’s Own Wobble
Section titled “4. The Rare Inward Event — A First-Person Account of the Operator’s Own Wobble”The lasting value of this record is not the account of his gaze weight making others wobble — he has watched that happen his whole life. It is that, for once, the operator wobbled, and so this is the first full first-person account of what wobble feels like from the inside. He almost never gets the chance to feel it, because his baseline for intensity is so high that “most people and things register to me as just normal even when it might not be.” For something to actually land on his system as overwhelming requires a massive, undeniable signal. The man was that signal.
Gaze weight is bidirectional — it has two registers. The operator exerts gaze weight in the perceptual register (his ideasthetic attention lands on others). The man exerts gaze weight in the somatic register (his body’s extreme, involuntary broadcast lands on others). Ordinarily, ordinary nervous systems wobble under either one. In this encounter, the man’s somatic gaze weight was intense enough to reach past the operator’s usual mental buffering and land directly in his physical nervous system — and the operator wobbled. That is the reciprocal discovery: the man is one of the few people whose signal can do to the operator what the operator does to everyone else.
The phenomenology, in his own words:
“My body is lighting up… I can feel my body being horrified still by it… I’m looking at my body and I’m thinking about these shivers and these goosebumps. And I’m wondering why it won’t stop, in that I know I don’t have control over it. It’s literally a physical reaction… but that’s really strong. I’ve never had that before… this one is really strong.”
The signature of his wobble, mapped to the framework’s machinery:
- Involuntary and uncontrollable — the reaction ran without consent (“I know I don’t have control over it”); the ideasthetic engine (Phase 1) converted the idea of the man’s reality straight into somatic charge, bypassing linguistic processing entirely.
- Mind–body split — his conscious mind stayed calm and curious while his body was overwhelmed. This is the pure form of ideasthetic wobble: the sensation is generated at the semantic-sensory layer, below and faster than the reflective mind, so the mind can watch its own body destabilize without being able to stop it. (This same split is what lets him execute the Phase 2 subject-object switch on it — observe the wobble as object rather than be it.)
- Slow to clear — the shivers “won’t stop” because a massive adrenaline/cortisol dump takes real time to metabolize out of the tissues even after the mind has declared the environment safe. The later felt sense of it “flowing away” is the nervous system completing its stress cycle — free energy discharging back to baseline (the return to Phase 3 NESS).
Why the wobble was the gift. In his own account: “his ability to register on my system actually meant that I finally got the signal that came through. I learned the key to how gaze weight works. I had the name, I had the life of doing it, and now I have what I can give him.” He had lived the phenomenon from the source side for forty years without a felt account of the receiving side. Wobbling — being, for once, the one who could not immediately metabolize the signal — is what handed him the inside view of the exact thing his own gaze does to other people. The record of this wobble is therefore the phenomenological ground-truth the concepts of gaze weight and wobble were previously missing.
5. One-Line Summary
Section titled “5. One-Line Summary”Ideasthesia is the engine (Phase 1): concepts become felt sensation, inward. Gaze Weight is that engine’s intensity crossing his boundary and landing on another body via neuroception — Gaze Transition Entropy turned outward. Wobble is the far body’s allostatic collapse when it has no shared ontology to metabolize the weight — the Phase 3 failure mode, which the shared ontology / Markov blanket (concretely, the mask) is built to prevent.
Terms to add to the framework glossary

Documented from the inside for the first time in the 2026-07-03 record, when the operator himself wobbled.
- Neuroception (Porges, Polyvagal Theory) — the subconscious, continuous nervous-system scan by which others feel gaze weight without cognitively knowing they are being perceived. The relational receptor the framework had not yet named.
